As mentioned above, I can't get it to work with forwarding, but I can with VPN. It's not much of a hassle, but I don't see why it shouldn't work with port forwarding. Has a single person been able to do it? If not, Lutron will need to update it's app to not require VPN or WiFi for access

My Lutron app has been working fine ever since they released the first update to fix this issue several months back. Ever since then, I have had no problems connecting either locally with WiFi or on 4G. I don't do any special port forwarding or VPN connection.

Remote Access through the App does not require port forwarding or a VPN. It should work fine via Wi-Fi or over the cellular network.
The ability to do Remote Programming, using the RA2 software (Inclusive required), requires the implementation of a VPN network (recommended).

Are you referring to the remote access with the paid account? That should work fine over cellular, but I have yet to hear of anyone doing remote access by just pointing to the house IP even with port forwarding. Otherwise, VPN works just as it always has. It seems Lutron is blocking the ability of the iOS app to work if not connected through wifi, a VPN or the new service. Has anyone found this is not the case?

I've setup port forwarding only and have had success on my system, but it can be limited by router functionality. I'll lookup my settings and post them.

Interesting. I don't recall the ports I used and would appreciate your info!

Guys, I just tested this again to see if it still works, and I don't have any issues using port forwarding. As I posted initially, it's as simple as forwarding TCP port 23 and TCP port 80 to the IP of your repeater. I used both a remote wifi connection, and also Verizon LTE. Firmware on repeater is 6.1, and I'm using the latest android Home+ app. Port 23 is the telnet connection to the repeater, and Port 80 talks to the webserver on the repeater to download the configuration into the Home+ app. I suspect the issue is with your airport extreme port forwarding. I, myself, only use the airport extreme for a wifi access point - I'm using pfsense for my router/firewall. That being said, I found a few folks having issues defining TCP port forwards in the extreme. It appears you may have to define the UDP protocol as well, otherwise it won't work? Not sure what that's about... here's where I was reading this - maybe it's worth a shot. discussions.apple.com/thread/4778860?start=0&tstart=0Good luck. Ryan

I tried those ports before on a SonicWALL security appliance (router) and a DD-WRT router without any success. I'll try again. Thanks!

Alright so I checked again and I have ports 23 and 80 forwarded to my Main Repeater. I also have a few other ports forwarded that someone else on here mentioned. I also confirmed that both public and private UDP and TCP are forwarded.
My VPN works fine and always has. The paid service is what I am having problems with. Everything works fine if I am local. I cannot however connect over remote WiFi or cellular.
My Main Repeater settings are: DHCP - Disabled IP Address - 10.0.1.XX Subnet Mask - Match Airport Extreme subnet Preferred DNS - Match Airport Extreme DNS Alternate DNS - Match Airport Extreme Gateway Address - Airport Extreme IP Address (not Airport Extreme Router Address but I have tried that also)
Everything saved and updated. Using Radio Ra 2 v6.1.0 and Lutron Home Control+ 5.0.11.
If I got into Edit Systems in the iPhone app it shows the following:
System Type - RadioRA 2 System Name - XXX IP Address/URL - 10.0.1.XX Username - PRECONFIGURED Password - PRECONFIGURED Telnet Port 23 HTTP Port 23
I have tried to delete the system and re-add it but it says its already associated with an email. Not sure if there is a way to start over to make sure its all right on Lutron server end.
Sorry for asking so many questions but I haven't been able to find any decent documentation or troubleshooting for the Remote Login feature.
Thanks for any help.

OK, well, I see 1, maybe 2 problems initially.
1. The gateway address in the repeater needs to be set to the IP of your router. I see where you say that you tried that, but go back in there, and make sure that is set right. This is how the repeater will know how to route traffic outside of it's local network. If you don't have that in there, then you won't get any traffic outside of the 10.0.1.XX network (I don't know your subnet, so I can't tell you exactly how big that network is). I assume it's a /24.
2. If you are using the remote access feature, then you have to put your public internet IP address in there in the iPhone app, not your private address. Sure, you put the private address in there when you are using VPN, but how is the app going to find your repeater when you are using the internet? So down there where you have 10.0.1.XX needs to be changed to either your public static IP, or if you have a dynamic from your ISP, then you should use a dynamic dns resolver of some sort (like dyndns or one of them). (Can somebody confirm the proper setting on this? I assumed it had to be your public IP, but now I'm not so sure... Maybe it needs to be the private address, and the repeater then relies on the gateway to make an outbound connection to Lutron's servers, and then communicates that way. I don't use this feature, so I'm guessing here.)
Oh, the other thing... if you are using VPN or the remote access feature - then I don't think you'll need to put any port forwards in. If what I said up top here makes sense, and you get it working... try to take those port forwards out, and see if it still works. I posted earlier in this thread about how I think that is supposed to work, and I don't think it requires you to forward any ports, and you'll want to close these ports up if it's not necessary.
I hope that gets you going. I don't use the feature myself.
Good luck, Ryan

Alright so I finally got it working. Took two emails from the Lutron support guys. The gateway and preferred DNS need to be set to 10.0.1.1 or 192.168.1.1 depending on your network configuration.
I updated those two things and saved the settings and I'm good to go. I'm going to test over the holiday but it looks good so far.
I think the network terminology is a little misleading in the iOS app and in the configuration tool. I have a fair amount of networking background and I was thinking more along the lines of what rdgerken was explaining. Oh well. Don't mean to nitpick semantics but it could have been clearer and would have saved a lot of frustration. Hope this helps someone.

chitownee,
I'm glad you got it working. Would you mind documenting exactly what you had to do to get it working? As I review this thread, I don't think it's clear exactly what you were trying to do, and what you had to do to get it working (for the benefit of others?) I know there were a few folks on here posting on this thread, and they were trying different things (some using VPN, some using paid remote access, and some trying to use port forwarding (without paid remote access)).
I, myself, have been able to use VPN access, and port forwarding with success on the android app. I have not tried the paid remote access.
